JJ Chalmers is a TV presenter with an inspirational story.
The army career of the former Royal Marine Commando was cut short after he suffered life-changing injuries following an IED explosion in Afghanistan. After 30 operations in just two months, and years of mental and physical rehabilitation, he went on to compete in the 2014 Invictus Games where he would go on to win three medals.
As a spokesman for the inaugural Invictus Games, JJ made a good first impression and soon embarked on a broadcasting career – and he hasn’t stopped since.

JJ Chalmers hit the broadcasting ground running in 2016, being one of the studio presenters for the Rio Paralympics and since 2017, he has anchored BBC 1’s coverage of the Invictus Games. JJ has become a key part of the channel’s sports team, with highlights including the Commonwealth Games, the London Marathon, the Tokyo Summer and Winter Olympics and Paralympics, the Anniversary Games, the IPC Athletics World Championships and the European Swimming Championships, as well as for Channel 4’s National Paralympic Day.
As part of the BBC presenting team, JJ has also presented at the Lord Mayor’s Show, covered Trooping the Colour, co-hosted their series running up to Remembrance Day, The People Remember, covered the funeral of Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh and was involved in D Day Memorial programming.
He has also taken part in a number of panel shows, talk shows and documentaries, including The One Show (2017-2020), Pointless Celebrities (2020), Christmas University Challenge (2019), Gardeners’ World (2022), Catchpoint (2022), Children in Need (2020), Pilgrimage: The Road to Santiago (2018), The Last Leg (2016-2021) and the acclaimed radio programme, Live From Helmand and Back (2017) – which would go on to be nominated for a Sports Journalist Award. In 2020, he starred in the popular show Strictly Come Dancing, where he reached the quarter finals.

In 2021, JJ contributed an essay to Letter To My Younger Self: The Big Issue Presents…100 Inspiring People on the Moments That Shaped Their Lives. In the writing, he talks about the comrades he lost, how his injury shaped him and how Invictus gave him a renewed sense of purpose.
